A 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by 19 year old Brett Russell Fuller lost control and overturned several times before coming to a stop in a strawberry field in Plant City.

Fuller was ejected from the car and suffered fatal injuries according to Hillsborough sheriff’s spokeswoman, Debbie Carter.

This fatality is a tragic example of not wearing a seat belt, while Fuller’s passenger, William White, who was restrained, received minor injuries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 57% of young motorists and passengers (age 16-20) who were killed in daytime accidents were not wearing seat belts.

That number increased to 68% for night time crashes.

Gabriells Saza, a senior at Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, and her mother escaped serious injuries two years ago when her car flipped on its side on a rain-slicked road. Both Saza and her mother were wearing their seat belts according to ABC News.

Accident takes a Small life

In a recent heartfelt article found in the Sun news out of Sebring, a baby girl and her mother will never see each other again as a result of a severe car crash caused by someone else’s negligence. Nicole J. Pounds, was driving with her baby daughter, Jayla Lee, and 3 other passengers Harriet McClennon, 53, Isaiah Wiggins, 7, and Passion McClennon, 10 months. Her 1999 Chevrolet was struck by Michael Andrew Hilkemeyer, 33 of Montgomery City, Mo., as she was making a left turn onto U.S. 27 from Scenic Highway. The report indicates Hilkemeyer ran the red light at the intersection in his truck.

In addition to the tragic death of Jayla Lee, the accident caused serious injuries to all the occupants of Pound’s vehicle. Nicole Pounds had internal injuries to her spleen, liver and kidneys. She had to undergo critical surgery this week, and had not been told of her daughter’s death. Family and friends would like her to rest before they break the news to her. A trust fund to help pay for the burial expenses has been established at Riverside National Bank under baby Jayla’s grandfathers name, Gerald Hurn. Our sympathies go out to all of the parties involved in this very tragic event.

The Bright Side of the Gas Crisis

Look at the bright side of the fuel crisis. Since the price of gasoline has surged, many Americans have curbed their travel plans. Less vehicles on the highways, means less opportunity for automobile accidents. At least that’s one of the theories being explored to account for the decline in highway traffic crash deaths as reported in a USA Today news article. Although the specific reasons are inconclusive, fewer deaths can only be considered a good thing, regardless of the reason. Unfortunately, with the number of vehicles on the road, automobile accidents will remain a daily part of our lives.

Florida No Fault Insurance Following the 2008 Law Change

No Fault insurance is designed to reimburse your initial medical bills and reimburse you for any lost time at work following an automobile accident, even if the accident was not your fault. Thus the name – No Fault. No Fault insurance appears on your automobile insurance policy as Personal Injury Protection and is commonly referred to as PIP insurance.

Under Florida Law and specifically the 2008 law change, your PIP insurance, which used to pay 80% of the “reasonable and customary” expenses incurred as a result of injuries suffered in a car crash, now pays up 80% of 200% of what medicare would allow. Because of this change a significant portion of the medical expenses you incur risk not being paid by PIP.
